Body Composition Testing

BodPod Setup

I’ve always been curious to have my body composition test via an accurate method (water weighing, Bod Pod, etc) but could not find anywhere local….until today.

I did a Google search for “Bod Pod testing” and one of the results was an article from May 2009 that appeared in the Hamilton Spec newspaper.  It indicated that McMaster Univertisy has a Performance center with a Bod Pod, and that they do testing for the general public.  SCORE!

I called them up and I have an appointment on Monday Feb 8 @ 5:30 PM.  I’ll be bringing my OMRON Hand Held Body Fat tester with me.  Once I’m done in the Bod Pod, I’ll check with my OMRON to see what the difference is, then I can correlate between the 2 for future reference.

Currently, my OMRON is telling me around 24%.  I predict the BodPod will tell me around 26-27%.

Anyhow, I’ll report back on the experience & results Monday night. 😎

Partner in Crime

I just wanted to give props to Mrs. Fat Guy.  She’s also on a fat loss journey.  Currently, she does her Wii Fit/Biggest Loser every day for 30 mins, and I also created a custom “Couch to 5k” program for her.

Last night was her first “session” and she pulled it off as planned without complaining once, and she got a great workout.  I’m very proud of her, plus it’s something we do together. 🙂

Training & Rant – Feb 1-2

Interesting week so far.  On Monday, I got all my planned workouts in, including the swim….and about that swim…

Why is it so energy draining?  I have a VO2max of 47 for running & biking.  I know that’s not earth shattering, but it’s decent for a heavy guy that’s only been training for about 1 or so.  But for swimming, I’m happy if I can get 25m done without drowning.  I get at the end of the pool and I’m gasping for air.  WHY???

I understand it’s different muscle group, a lot more muscles involved, but damn.  I’ve been at it for about a month now and have yet to see any improvements.  I’m too poor to pay a personal swim coach that actually knows what they’re talking about.  I’m taking lessons at Brock University, but the instructor looks like she’s 19-20 and sounds like she started swimming 2 years ago.  OK, she’s obviously better than me, but I don’t think she’s to great of an instructor as she says my freestyle stroke looks good.  If it was good, I think I’d be able to do more than 25m at a time.

I need to find some land based exercises that simulates swimming to I can build my endurance, while breathing through a straw.  For now, I’ll keep at it.  My goal is do be able to do 200m non-stop by April 1st.  If I can’t reach that goal, then I will seriously reconsider switching my triathlon to a duathlon.

Strength Training, and Gym Etiquette

Monday & Tuesdays are 2 of the 3 days I strength train.  Today, was leg day, also upper back & abs.  For the most part, I felt good although my abs were still sore from LAST WEEK! 😐

The gym I go to only has the 1 leg press machine, and also is frequented by alot of seniors.  Well seniors usually don’t do much there except repeat the same exercises they’ve probably been doing for the whole year, and also do a lot of talking amongst each other.  Problem is, they end up tying up the machines while they chat.  Today, I had to put my foot down.  Workout or go to the coffee shop.  Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that they are willing to go there and improve and/or maintain good health, but due consideration to others is also important, doesn’t matter what age.

Another bad experience today;  I was on the middle elliptical.  Halfway through my cardio, 2 older ladies decided to occupy the ellipticals on either side of me.  Guess what?  They both had strong, nose burning, cheap $20 perfume.  WHY???  WHY does anyone were perfume to a gym?

Anyhow, just had to get that off my chest. 😉

Weigh-In: Jan 28, 2010

Thursday mornings are my “Official” weigh in days, and I will post the results every Thursday.  I do weigh myself throughout the week, but fluctuations happen from diet, etc.

This weeks numbers look like this:

Weight: 216.2 lbs (down 1.8 lbs from last week)
Body Fat:
24.2% (down 1% from last week)
Lean Body Mass(LBM):
163.9 lbs (up 0.8 lbs from last week)

Not a bad week overall.
