If I learned anything in this last year of lifestyle change & fitness is that my body is an amazing machine, and I learn something new all the time. Here a couple examples;
Sept 2010 – Two days away from my half marathon, I wake up with a sore throat & stuffy nose/sinuses. GREAT!!! I’m thinking to myself, “I haven’t been sick in over a year, and now I get this before one of the toughest races of the year? WHY???” Needless to say I was a little pissed. So I go to the drug store, pick up some of those ColdFX(yes I was grasping at straws) & started popping them like candy. For the next 2 days, I keep taking those “magic pills”. I also made sure to keep well hydrated all the time, and getting more rest. Things have NOT improved at this point. When I woke up at 5 AM the day of the race, still a sore throat & stuffy. At that point I just conseeded to the fact that I probably wasn’t going to make my goal of sub-2hrs, and was just going to finish in whatever time my body aloud me to. I did the race, felt really good during the race, and finished in 1:54 exceeding my goal. Now the interesting part; Later that day after a shower & taking a nap, all my symptoms where gone…GONE!!!! No sore throat, no stuffiness. I then thought it could have been a side affect of the race/adrenaline and the symptoms would return the next day. NO THEY DIDN’T. It was as if I was never sick! Did the 2 hrs of having a higher body temp from the exercise burn out the bug? Who knows. All I know is I felt better than I did before the half marathon.
Oct 2010 – Last week I went on a 3 hr mountain bike ride on fairly technical single track/trails. Well, I pushed a little to hard, rode a little too fast and ended up flipping over the handle bars 3 times “Jackass” style, 2 of those I was surprised I rode away without broken bones. Needless to say, I was extremely sore the next day. As the week progressed it got better, but every morning my lower back was crazy sore/stiff getting out of bed, and it would slowly get better as the day went on. But, to avoid problems down the road, I avoided any kind of training the rest of the week so I could heal properly. By Sunday morning (yesterday), I was still stiff getting out of bed. I couldn’t believe this. But I was fed up and said “SCREW IT…I’m exercising today.” The weather was beautiful out so I went for an easy 10k run in the late morning. The run felt great, no pain anywhere. After having a bite to eat, I waited 30 mins and went for a 30k/55 min bike ride which included 17 MPH headwinds for 3/4s of the ride….torturous. Got home, and still felt great. Legs were tired but no pain anywhere. Somehow I thought I was going to wake up this morning with an even stiffer/sore lower back, but guess what? NOTHING. No soreness or stiffness. It seems my body likes heal itself through exercise.
I’m not encouraging anyone to go ahead and do this. I’m just reporting what happen in my situations. But I will certainly use this as experience for future reference.
